Why does my roof have stains?

Water stains found on a roof can be visually unappealing and are oftentimes indicative of a larger roofing problem. These stains can affect your home’s property values, and if they are left untreated can leave your roof and home vulnerable to mother nature. If you find yourself in the unfortunate circumstance of dealing with water stains on your roof it is important to be aware of what the various colored stains mean and how to properly deal with them.

Black or Green Stains
Black or green stains found on your roof are evidence that actual organisms such as algae or moss are surviving on your roof. The sunlight, heat, and moisture make roof conditions ideal for the growth of these microorganisms. The buildup turns to mold and mildew and leaves streaks that become eyesores. The buildup can even turn to moss and lift shingles leaving your home vulnerable. A simple solution would seem to be to scrub or power wash the stains, however this method may further damage the roof leaving irreparable damage.

White or Yellow Stains
White or yellow stains provide evidence of a hard water buildup from an air-conditioning system or cooler. Oftentimes these stains are found underneath the air-conditioning and are highly visible. These stains also indicate a ripe climate for buildup of funguses that can eat an entire roof.

Remedies
Regardless of the color of roof stain, it is important to act quickly to avoid further unnecessary roof damage. The first step is to identify the root cause of the stain so you can properly deal with the issue. Next you should treat the stain with either vinegar or bleach. Vinegar will fade the damage whereas bleach will kill the growing organisms. Please note: stronger chemicals can be dangerous and toxic and are not recommended as part of a do-it-yourself project. Finally, you should apply a stain resistant primer before applying any paint.

When in doubt, a qualified, reputable roofer can help. An experienced roofer will generally work more quickly, more efficiently, and provide you with a solution that will last longer than work done on your own. And finally, let’s not forget the potentially dangerous trip up the ladder you will save yourself. Roofing projects are costly and important and should usually be left to the professionals.

5 Important Reasons to Maintain Your Roof

Your roof is one of the most important components to your home because it is what keeps you safe from adverse weather conditions outside. It is also one of the most expensive home improvement undertakings homeowners will encounter. A well-built roof can last upwards of 30 years if it is properly maintained. Below are five reasons maintaining your roof is such an important part of owning a home.

Increases Lifespan of Roof: The outside weather can seriously damage or even ruin a roof beyond repair. By continuously monitoring and maintaining your roof there is a good chance you can catch minor roof repairs before they become a major roof replacement.

Financial Savings: The financial savings realized by maintaining your roof can be significant. By routinely having your roof inspected you can avoid a large unnecessary bill of replacing a roof. Additionally, professional roofers are expensive in emergency situations, and when a roof begins to leak or need fixed you won’t have time to shop around for the best price. Roof service bills add up; therefore, it is important to be proactive in regard to roof maintenance. Finally, many roof warranties are not honored due to improper maintenance among other reasons.

Curb Appeal: Most homeowners care about their home’s outward appearance, but the curb appeal of a visually appealing, sturdy, well-constructed roof is important for another reason – property value. A knowledgeable realtor will tell you the condition of your roof can make or break a home’s sale and has much to do with the price your home will sell for should you decide to move.

Environmentally Friendly: The majority of old roofs end up in landfills. By properly maintaining your roof you can avoid an entire roof replacement and help conserve the environment.

Unnoticed Damage: Water damage, insulation damage, structural damage, mold, and more can be the result of a roof leak. By monitoring and maintaining your roof you may be able to avoid some or all of this damage.

As you can see it is very important to maintain your roof so small repairs to not become a major replacement. With new roofs costing thousands of dollars, it is much wiser to be proactive in roof maintenance than waiting for a major irreversible roof replacement project. An experienced and reputable roofer can assist you in maintaining your roof. If you are in need of roof repair, roof maintenance or a new roof, our expert professionals can take care of it for you. Crown Roofing handles all types of roofing systems from tile, shingle, slate and metal. There is no job that is too small and no task that is too big. 3 New Year’s Resolutions for your Roof

Each year millions of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions as they ring in the new year. Most of the resolutions that are made involve personal goals such as eating healthier and weight loss, others may involve jobs, financial situations or personal relationships. What many people do not realize is that New Year’s Resolutions don’t have to be just about self-improvement. Resolutions can and should include taking care of investments, such as the roof of your home or business.

Your property is one of the biggest investments made. As a home or business owner, taking care of one of your biggest assets should be part of your New Year’s Resolutions.

3 New Year’s Resolutions for your Residential or Commercial Roof

Inspection – Inspecting your roof is one of the simplest ways of keeping your roof in good shape. Doing a visual inspection from the ground is a great start as it may help you to see damages such as broken or missing tiles or shingles. However, sometimes damages may not be so visible and most home or business owners will be unable to notice these faulty areas on their own until it’s too late, or until a leak has already happened. Scheduling a yearly roof inspection with a professional allows you the chance to catch any minor roofing issues before they spiral out of control. Our experts can pinpoint potential problems in the early stages which will keep the repair cost down and will protect the integrity of your home or business.

Clean and Maintain – Cleaning your roof and maintaining the areas surrounding your roof is an important factor in protecting your roof and prolonging the longevity of your roofing system. Cleaning your roofing system, whether it be tile, shingle, metal or flat, will not only please the eye, it will help to keep it in efficient working order. Eliminating the buildup of debris from your rooftop can help to reduce the risk of mold and mildew. Maintaining the areas surrounding your roof is important as well. Trees which are too close to your roof can cause many issues if unattended. Large trees not only leave your structure vulnerable to having branches fall on your roof causing damages, the leaves can clog gutters causing rain water to not properly drain away from your roofing system. Large trees and branches may also block the sunlight from your roof, providing dark and damp areas where mold and mildew can thrive.

RepairRepairing small roofing issues at an early stage can help you to save money in the long run. While a cracked or missing tile or shingle may not cause much of an aesthetic problem, especially if it appears in an unnoticeable area, they should not be ignored. With missing or damaged shingles or tiles, your roof is less likely to remain weatherproof. Things such as cracked or broken tiles, missing shingles or wear and tear around chimneys or vent pipes can turn into larger issues if left unattended to.

Overall, the key to keeping a healthy roof is with regular upkeep – inspection, cleaning and maintenance, and repair. While a few of the strategies in upkeeping your roof may appear to be simple, others may warrant a call to your local roofing contractor. At Crown Roofing, we have the knowledge and expertise in working with all types of roofing systems. If you are in need of roof repair, roof maintenance or a new roof, our expert professionals can take care of it for you. Roof Maintenance Tips

Helpful Tips to Maintain Your Roof & Increase its Life Expectancy

Your home’s roof is one of its most important features, therefore maintaining it and keeping it in the best possible condition must be a priority. Repairing or replacing a roof can be a financial burden, however regularly maintaining your roof will help your roof last longer and save you money over the long run. The following tips are a few preventative maintenance tips you can do to ensure your roof lasts as long as possible.

Roof Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect your Roof Regularly: At a minimum complete an annual inspection of your roof to identify any damage or potential future issues. In addition to an annual inspection you should inspect your roof after major storms or hurricanes. While inspecting be sure to look for any dips in the roof which may signal a leak as well as any cracked shingles or excess debris buildup. The sooner you identify any damage to a roof the easier it is to repair.
  • Keep the Surface and Gutters Clean and Free of Debris: Keeping your gutters clean and clear is important to maintaining your roof. A trowel can be used to clean larger debris from gutters and a simple garden hose will work help remove finer debris. Keep the roofs surface clean of debris and leaves as this can lead to additional roof issues.
  • Eliminate overhanging branches/trees: Overhanging trees and branches can leave homeowners with major damage should a large branch fall on the roof. Additionally, overhanging branches or trees allow small animals and rodents to access your roof and cause damage.

A roof is one of the most important features of a home as it protects us from inclement weather. A new roof can cost thousands of dollars; therefore, it is important to maximize the longevity of your roof. By regularly inspecting your roof, keeping the gutters and surface clear, and trimming overhanging branches you can help prevent small roofing issues from becoming major repair or replacement jobs. Finally, should you need a roof repaired or replaced it is important to only use a reputable, licensed, professional roofing company.

Hurricane Irma: Preparing Your Roof

Hurricane Irma has developed into a Category 5 hurricane, according to CNN. Computers forecast the storm to turn toward Florida by the weekend. If it does, the impact on The Sunshine State could be catastrophic.  As the National Hurricane Center reports, “The hurricane will be moving through an environment of low vertical wind shear, a moist mid-level atmosphere, and increasing upper-ocean heat content, and this is ideal for some additional intensification.”

After declaring a state of emergency across Florida, Gov. Rick Scott said President Donald Trump had “offered the full resources of the federal government as Floridians prepare for Hurricane Irma.” Scott also ordered 7,000 National Guard troops to report for duty by Friday morning.  Of those, 100 were activated Tuesday to begin helping with preparations, he said. “We do not know the exact path of this storm, but weather can change in an instant and while we hope for the best, we must prepare for the worst,” Scott said in a statement.
In addition to protecting your family and loved ones, it’s critical for residents to protect both their home and business in these serious scenarios.  Unfortunately, the roof is often an afterthought when it comes to preparing for hurricane season. Most roof owners don’t take measures to preserve a roof until it’s too late. Our Fort Myers roofing contractors are here with a few simple tips to help you protect your property through the upcoming storm and though the rest of hurricane season.
Trim Your Trees
This tip is helpful year-round, not just during hurricane season. Trees that hang near or over your roof can be dangerous in virtually any storm, but especially in a hurricane. When wind speeds increase, limbs can go flying. If a tree limb flies its way onto your roof, potential damage could result and allow water into your home, causing further electrical damage or hurt someone in the structure. Trees can also cause debris buildup, especially in your roof’s valleys. Sticks, pine needles, leaves, and other debris can pile on your roof. When this ‘mulch’ gets wet – it will stay wet. The dampness can cause the roof structure to deteriorate and eventually rot.  A simple, and regular, trimming of your trees can help you to prepare and potentially avoid these problems.
Clean Your Gutters
It’s too easy to neglect your gutters. In the event of a serious storm, and especially a hurricane, it’s critical that you take the time to clean it out beforehand. You want to ensure that all your gutters and drainage systems are clear so that the rain can flow freely. If you’ve got buildup in your gutters during Florida’s rain and hurricane season, backed up water can dangerously intrude your home.
Fix Loose or Missing Shingles
While loose or missing shingles may seem like no big deal, they can lead to some serious problems if they’re not addressed before a storm. It’s critical to secure lose shingles and replace ones that are missing to help prevent storm water from leaking in to your home or business. It’s also a safe idea to check for loose eave and gable end vents, soffits, or turbines, and rusted flashing before a storm and repair these issues as well.
Secure Yard Items
Various yard decorations and furniture can turn into flying projectiles quicker than you’d think. It’s important to either move these items inside or die them down outside to help ensure they stay put during storm winds.

Neglecting your roof before a storm can result in a significant amount of damage. Leaking water risks roof collapse as well as damage to the attic, insulation, walls, and your possessions. Prepare your home and business before it’s too late. After a storm, it’s critical to have your roof addressed. Do so by calling a certified roofing contractor in Naples to assess the damage and recommend the best steps for you to take to recover. Crown Roofing will take care of the rest.

New Year’s Roof Resolutions

As we wrap up 2016 and gear up to ring in the New Year, it’s an excellent time to look past the holidays and focus in on the health of your roof in 2017.  With the New Year approaching, most of us will be creating lists comprised of New Year’s Resolutions to achieve on a personal level.  Some of the most common resolutions include losing weight, giving up smoking, saving money and vacationing more.  But have you considered focusing your resolution efforts on your home or business and making some money-saving roof resolutions?

Our Fort Myers roofing contractors are reminding home and business owners across the state of the importance of the roof over their head.  Because your roof is one of the most aesthetic and functional aspects of your home or business it makes perfect sense to keep an eye on it to keep it in the prettiest, most functional condition possible.  We’re recommending that you add your roof to this year’s important list of New Year’s Resolutions and if you’re not quite sure what that entails, we invite you to keep reading:

Schedule a Professional Inspection:  The truth of the matter is that most home and business owners are unable to spot faults on their own in a roofing system until it’s too late — or until water has penetrated the surface.  By scheduling an inspection with one of our roofing experts, we can help to pinpoint potential problem areas before it’s too late.  Preventative action always pays off.

Consider Roof Cleaning: Cleaning your roof not only helps to please the eye, but it also helps in keeping it in efficient working order.  Eliminating leaf and debris buildup can reduce the risk of mold and mildew that can seriously threaten the functionality of your roofing system.

Replace Broken Shingles and Tiles: If your home or business has loose or missing shingles or tiles, you may wind up facing much more than an aesthetic problem.  With missing or damaged shingles or tiles, your roof is much less likely to remain weatherproof.

Keep An Eye on Your Gutters:  It’s critical to keep your gutters in working order to allow water overflow to drain from your roofing system.  You want to ensure that water flows away from your roof without pooling in corners.  You can also check your gutters to find out if you have significant and threatening shingle or tile breakage as well.

Consider A Roof Replacement: Do you the age of your roof or what its expected lifespan is?  You never want to wait too long to replace a roof.  Catching problems before they occur can help to preserve your interior and belongings as well and can wind up saving you some serious cash.

If you don’t know where to start with your roofing resolutions, allow the roofing specialists in Naples and the surrounding areas to help you with all of your roofing concerns.  If you are in need of roof repair, roof maintenance or a new roof, our expert professionals can take care of it for you.  Crown Roofing handles all types of roofing systems from tile, shingle, slate and metal.  There is no job that is too small and no task that is too big.  Crown Roofing has offices across Central, South and Southwest Florida.  Call us today for a free estimate at 855-276-9655.

Revisiting Roofing Safety: Keeping Roofing Contractor Safe

When in comes to the roofing industry, safety should be a number-one priority for everyone involved.  Skipping out on preventative safety measures because they take up too much time makes it all the more common for an accident to happen — so why take the chance?  Our roofing contractors in Orlando remind roofing personnel across the nation to continuously keep safety observations as a top concern, and we’re here with a few reminders to help you do just that.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), there were close to 5,000 workers killed on the job across the United States in 2014.  On average, that’s more than 90 a week (or more than 13 each day).  Fatal work injuries involving contractors accounted for more than 15 percent of all recorded fatal work injuries for the same year.  In construction, OSHA has deemed the four most common causes of workplace fatalities as the “Fatal Four”.  These causes include falls, electrocutions, struck by object and caught-in/between incidents.  Eliminating the “Fatal Four” would help to save more than 540 workers’ lives in the US each year.  Our Winter Springs roofing contractors are here with a few general roofing safety tips to help keep you and your crews safe out there on every job.

General Roofing Safety:

  • Ensure that your workplace is always clean, organized and blocked off from non-roofers.  Be sure to note each potentially dangerous area within your work site, including unsafe roof access and low-hanging power lines.
  • Never go onto a roof alone. Always have someone with you just in case.
  • Never work on a roof that is slippery or wet.
  • Avoid working on a roof when it’s too hot.  In 2014, there were more than 2,600 workers who suffered from heat illness on the job.  Close to 20 died that same year from heat stroke and other related causes.  These injuries and fatalities are completely preventable.
  • When you’re not using your power tools, secure them with short lengths of rope or Bungee cords.
  • Don’t forget your roof harness. A harness set typically includes a roof anchor, harness, rope, and lanyard.
  • Wear proper footwear. Be sure to wear boots or shoes with good tread and rubber soles.

Ladder Safety:

  • Be sure to follow all warning and instruction labels on ladders.
  • Never use a ladder that is damaged or broken.
  • Be sure to always maintain three points on contact with the ladder when climbing.
  • Only use ladders for their intended purpose.
  • Check all rung locks and spreader braces on your ladder to make sure they are set.
  • Only one person at a time is permitted on a ladder unless the ladder is specifically designed for more than one climber (such as a Trestle Ladder).
  • Climb facing the ladder, move one step at a time and firmly set one foot before moving the other.
  • Never place a ladder on a box, barrel or other object to gain additional height.
  • Once your ladder is fully extended and leaning against the roof, fasten the ladder’s top to a rafter using roof anchors.

Electrical Safety:

  • It’s critical to avoid power lines at all costs.  When they are unavoidable, be sure to contact your local utility company before you begin working in the area.
  • Be sure to use a fiberglass or wooden ladder instead of metal.  Be extremely cautious when installing metal flashings as nearby electricity can jump or “arc” to metal objects located several feet away.
  • Never, ever touch hot wires with your tools or your hands.
  • Don’t attempt to operate machines unless you’ve been trained and authorized to do so.
  • Assume all wires are energized.

Material Safety:

  • A lot of time and materials go into each roofing project.  While you may be inclined to carry as much as you can to minimize trips, it’s a very dangerous move.  This is especially relevant when climbing ladders or walking across rooftops.
  • Be sure that you store your materials close to the roof to save both energy and time when retrieving the necessities.
  • Lift with your legs.  Do not lift with your back.  Take breaks when tired to avoid injuries.
  • Ensure that you and your fellow roofers are following the material manufacturer’s instructions.

The Importance of Regular Roof Cleaning

There’s never a bad time to tend to the cleanliness of your roof in Fort Myers and surrounding Florida cities.  Here in Florida, we’re provided with ideal weather for year-round roof cleaning.  Costly repairs and higher-than-average cooling expenses are just a couple of ways that business and home owners can expect to overspend on resources when roof maintenance is neglected.

To help to prevent issues from becoming an unplanned and unwanted expense, our Naples roofing contractors are here to provide you with a few simple actions you can take to help keep your home and business roof clean:

  • Frequently inspect for damage. It’s a good ideal to inspect the structure and the roofing membrane periodically for damage.  You will want to keep an eye out for tears and punctures in the membrane.  Inspect and ensure that wind and recent storms have not compromised the reliability of the membrane.
  • Remove debris. It’s critical to remove leaves, branches, trash and other materials from the roof.  If you neglect to remove such items, they can blow around and potentially cause tears and punctures to the membrane.  They can also clog drains, which can create puddling and other water drainage issues that can lead to even more serious roofing issues.  Make sure you’re inspecting and cleaning all of your gutters, overflow drains, roof drains and scuppers to make sure you’ve got a free flow of rainwater on your roof.
  • Clean your roof. Not only is a clean roof an aesthetically-pleasing roof, but it can also help to improve the performance of your roofing membrane.  When the membrane is dirty, you run the risk for a higher surface temperature.
  • Consider enlisting a qualified roofing contractor to help ensure that your roof is not only clean but efficient. With Crown Roofing, we can help you to obtain the quality protection of your roof through online roof management software, periodic roof inspection and maintenance services, and annual budgeting reports with dedicated service technicians.

Flat roofs, by design, are more likely to be compromised by the elements of weather because of their positioning.  Remember that energy consumption is a serious expense that helps to keep the inside of your home and business comfortable for residents, guests and workers.  A clean roof is a cheaper roof.  Keeping up with the cleanliness and the maintenance of your roof can help you to better avoid costly issues and can help to keep your roofing standing strong through the tough Florida weather for years to come.

We recommend all home and business owners to keep a close eye on the condition of their roofing system, and the best way to do that is through a thorough and comprehensive Bonita Springs roof inspection and maintenance agreement with Crown Roofing.  Call us at 855-276-9655 today for a free estimate. Not only do we provide regular inspections, but we can help to repair current roofing systems that may be failing or we can install new roofing systems to best help you, your family and your business stay safe. Routine Roof Inspections and Maintenance

Keeping a close eye on your roofing system is imperative for all home and business owners.  It’s easy to scrutinize a home or business during a quick inspection of its interior, but it’s not so easy to spot problems on the roof.  Repairs to a roofing system can be some of the costliest of home or business repairs that an owner may face.  This is why regular inspections and routine maintenance can wind up saving you lots in long run.  Roof inspections in Naples and elsewhere throughout the state of Florida can be one of your best, and most rewarding, investments.

Crown Roofing’s approach to your roof inspection is clear, simple and straight-forward.  For new roofing systems, we recommend our roof inspections and maintenance programs to be implemented at the beginning of your roof’s life cycle.  For older roofing systems, it’s equally important to ensure regular inspections and maintenance to help to prolong your roof’s lifespan.

Our thorough roof inspections in Fort Myers and the surrounding areas can help you to identify your roof’s problem areas.  We can pinpoint the exact needs of your roof and help you to determine the most effective plan of action to help to correct any problems.  During the course of a Crown Roofing Maintenance Agreement, our skilled roofers will visit your property regularly, according to your custom maintenance plan selection, and offer you with recommendations for both preventative and corrective repairs to help keep your roof at optimal performance.

Why maintenance for your roof?

There are a number of things that can cause deterioration of you roof, including severe weather conditions, normal wear and tear, age of the roof, shifts in the building frame/foundation and improper design.   Regular inspections will lead to early detection of any potential roofing problems and will not only help to protect assets, but will help to maintain safe work and living environments for the building’s occupants.

Crown Roofing’s Objectives:

  • Determine if your roofing system is performing in accordance with its intended function
  • Identify any signs of deterioration, hazard or weakness
  • Identify, record and present needed repairs
  • Maintain the roofing system to help keep our clients’ minds at ease

Unfortunately, many home and business owners in Florida neglect to keep up with the maintenance of their roof.  Perhaps it’s the ‘out-of sight/out-of-mind’ theory that allows these inspections to fall by the wayside.  In these cases, when many of these home and business owners identify a problem area in their roofing system, the damage has been done and the repairs can be costly.  Keeping up with the condition of you roof can help to avoid these expensive surprises.
